The San Francisco 49ers were able to draft QB Colin Kaepernick in the second round of the 2011 NFL draft and shortly after that he underwent surgery on his leg. We're not sure about the details of the surgery but Kaepernick did indicate on ESPN's NFL Live that the surgery may have scared some teams off in the draft.
Colin Kaepernick’s Surgery May Have Scared Some Teams Off In 2011 NFL Draft
Kaepernick did say a medical report surfaced before the draft detailing need for the surgery, which might have scared off some teams. "Should be back up and running real soon, nothing to worry about," Kaepernick said. "I'm not going to be missing anything."
There’s not much to miss anyway. With the NFL lockout Kaepernick is stuck learning Jim Harbaugh’s offense from his former pupil, QB Andrew Luck. So, really, the lockout may have helped Kaepernick in terms of timing on the surgery.
It appears he may not be the day one starter for the 49ers anyway. QB Alex Smith is expected to return and he’ll likely be the starter with Kaepernick pushing him.
