What effect will the NFL lockout have on the UFL?

The “other” football league held their draft on Monday night (via Twitter!) and there were several notable former NFL players and potential undrafted free agents that were selected.

The NFL lockout means teams can’t contact potential UDFAs so some of these players are sitting in limbo right now. The UFL has to be an intriguing option for those that believe the lockout could go on for a while.

A court decision is expected this week that will help decide whether the lockout will last a couple more days or a couple more months. If it’s the latter, the UFL may be the best move for some of these UDFAs. Would they rather train by themselves, hoping the lockout ends, and a team calls? Or would they hop on a UFL team so they can stay in shape and provide NFL teams some more game tape?

It’s an intriguing set of questions and one some of these potential UDFAs will have to answer. This weeks’ court ruling will provide some more clarity but I think this situation highlights these potential UDFAs as the real losers of the NFL lockout.

If the lockout goes later into the summer and training camp is compromised, there simply won’t be the time for NFL teams to get a good look at some of these guys. You may invite a dozen or more undrafted free agents to your training camp, parse through them and a couple may even make the roster.

With a lockout that goes late into the summer, that may not happen.

So it’s not just the NFL players that are waiting for a decision from the courts. It’s also those guys that are deciding between a shot at an NFL training camp and the “other” football league.
