It’s become commonplace for an NFL player to fail a drug test and then to quickly claim that there were hidden ingredients in a supplement he took that caused the failed drug test. Many times, this is sort of like the “My Twitter account was hacked” excuse.
Rams’ David Vobora Awarded $5.4 Million In Supplement Case
In the case of Rams LB David Vobora, the excuse is legitimate.
Vobora was suspended in 2009 after failing a drug test and claimed the supplement he took was tainted with something that was not listed and which ultimately violated the league’s policy on steroids.
Vobora said at the time he would sue the supplement company. That’s what he did and, two years later, he’s been vindicated as the company Ultimate Sports Spray has been ordered to pay Vobora a whopping $5.4 million for lost wages and damage to his reputation.
When athletes comes out with excuses like this, I’m always amazed that more of them aren’t successfully following through on their threats to sue the company that provided them a tainted supplement. That’s probably because the athletes aren’t always telling the truth
In Vobora’s case, he was. And he was paid back in a big way for it.
