Shortly after the NFL lockout went into effect in March, DeMaurice Smith, head of the NFL Players Association, announced to players he would be lowering his salary during the work stoppage. His basic message was that his job was to get an agreement done with the league and he wasn’t able to do it.
DeMaurice Smith’s Lockout Salary Inspires NBA Players Union
It was a PR move, sure, but it was apparently an effective one because NBA players, who are entering their own lockout on Thursday night, are now bringing up Smith’s salary with their own union head.
Shane Battier’s question, directed to Players Association executive director Billy Hunter, was simple: The NFL’s union leader, DeMaurice Smith, had agreed to take $1 in salary for the length of the NFL lockout.
Will you do it too, Billy?
Actually, Battier is wrong. Smith reportedly told players he went to a salary of $0.
That won’t make Billy Hunter feel any better.
