San Francisco 49ers QB QB Alex Smith is leading his teammates in player-only workouts this summer as he's expected to return to the 49ers, likely as the starting quarterback. It's been widely assumed that Smith will take the starter's role as Jim Harbaugh has consistently said Smith can do the job.
Not Everyone Is Sure Alex Smith Will Be San Francisco 49ers QB
49ers WR Michael Crabtree isn't so sure.
When asked by reporters if he thought catching passes from Smith was important to building chemistry, Crabtree responded: "Who's the quarterback?"When told Smith was the likely starter, Crabtree said: "He's the quarterback? I'm just asking."
I don’t think Crabtree’s words are putting Smith’s standing with the team in doubt. Harbaugh has made it very clear that Smith is likely to return as the starter with the NFL even having to tell him to tone down talking about Smith so much during the lockout.
What this may stem from is a few words Smith had last week on Crabtree. The San Jose Mercury News asked Smith last week why Crabtree wasn’t at the workouts and he responded, “Great question.”
