The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Kansas City Chiefs open their 2011 preseason campaigns with a Friday night contest at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. Both the Bucs and the Chiefs came roaring back from brutal 2009 seasons to post winning records in 2010. The Bucs road Josh Freeman and LeGarrette Blount to a 10-6 record. The Chiefs got strong QB play from Matt Cassel, but benefited even more so from a brilliant season from Jamaal Charles.
Some have argued the Bucs played a bit above their heads and are due for a letdown in 2011. Tampa Bay was quiet in free agency, but their draft has resulted in two rookies on the defensive line. After adding Gerald McCoy in 2010, the Bucs added Adrian Clayborn and Da'Quan Bowers in 2011. Their most experienced defensive lineman is Roy Miller, who will be entering his third season in the league. If the line can come together this season, the Bucs could have the makings of a ferocious defense.
The Kansas City Chiefs focused primarily on free agency, but also added in some solid talent via the draft. All of the additions will lead to intriguing depth chart battles on both sides of the ball. On offense, Jonathan Baldwin will look to secure a starting position, but will have to fend off free agent addition Steve Breaston. Casey Wiegmann was brought back for another year, but he rookie Rodney Hudson will be looking to make his bones this preseason and force the Chiefs into a decision. Jared Gaither's recent decision to sign with the Chiefs adds one more battle the team will be sorting out starting Friday night.
