The Carolina Panthers returned to practice on Monday, where second-year quarterback Jimmy Clausen continues to work ahead of 2011 first overall pick Cam Newton, Joseph Person of The Charlotte Observer reports.

Quarterback Jimmy Clausen continues to work ahead of Cam Newton during Carolina Panthers training camp
Clausen completed four of his seven pass attempts for 69 yards a touchdown against the New York Giants on Saturday night, but his second pass was intercepted and returned 56 yards for a touchdown by linebacker Michael Boley. On the ensuing series, Clausen responded to his miscue with an incomplete pass and took a nine-yard loss on a sack by defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul. Newton played the second, third and into the fourth quarter on Saturday night, completing 8-of-19 for 134 yards with his top highlight coming on a 36-yard connection with second-year wide receiver Armanti Edwards.
Panthers head coach Ron Rivera anticipates naming a starting quarterback for the regular season before the team's third preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals on August 25.
