Jason La Canfora of NFL Network has a list of all the salary cap numbers of every team in the NFL. The average cap space is about $11 million, according to the report. The Kansas City Chiefs top the list with nearly $32 million in cap space and the St. Louis Rams are at the other end as they're about $800,000 over the salary cap.
NFL Salary Cap Space: Rams Over The Limit; Chiefs Have $32 Million In Space
Here’s a look at the top and the bottom of the list:
Top five teams with most cap space: Kansas City Chiefs, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Cincinnati Bengals, Buffalo Bills.
Of those teams, I think you would point to the top two -- Chiefs and Bucs -- as the most likely to make the playoffs. The Jaguars could be in that discussion as well. When you’re a good team, like those three are, having a lot of salary cap space is advantageous.
When you’re not a good team -- like the Bengals and Bills -- it’s a little more confusing as to why there’s so much salary cap space. Those teams will still have the opportunity to add players and extend the ones in-house as the season goes on.
Top five teams with least cap space: St. Louis Rams, Minnesota Vikings, Houston Texans, Detroit Lions, Atlanta Falcons.
The Falcons make sense as a team near the top considering they have a very good roster. The Vikings, on the other hand, have some holes in their roster and very little flexibility with the salary cap right now. That’s not a great position to be in.
