On Tuesday morning, a report emerged indicating that veteran running back Clinton Portis had completed a workout with the Miami Dolphins. Well, the Dolphins have signed a veteran ex-Redskins veteran running back, but that back is Larry Johnson. The deal was announced via the team's official Twitter account.
Larry Johnson Signs With Miami Dolphins; Veteran RB Apparently Chosen Over Clinton Portis
During his career with the Chiefs, Johnson emerged as one of the league's premiere running backs; through the 2005 and 2006 seasons, he took the ball 752 times for 3,359 yards, good for an average of 4.7 per carry. Thanks to a litany of incidents that reflected poorly on his character, however, Johnson wore out his welcome in Kansas City. Since leaving the Chiefs, he appeared briefly in the Bengals' and Redskins' backfields.
Johnson will be 32 years old in November. It’s difficult to see how this move will benefit the Dolphins in a meaningful way, and the team’s apparently decision to choose Johnson over Portis -- a seemingly superior, though also aging, running back -- is an interesting one.
The team has not yet announced the specifics of the deal. That Johnson will even make the 53-man roster is far from certain.
