New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick held his weekly appearance on Boston sports radio WEEI and had something very interesting to say about extra points.
Patriots’ Bill Belichick Suggests Moving Extra Points Back
He says if he were making the rules, he would consider moving the extra point back to the 15 or 20 yard line.
“Philosophically, plays that are non-plays shouldn’t be in the game. I don’t think it is good for the game. Extra points, when the odds are 99 percent range in extra points it is not a play. Lets move the ball back to the 15-20 yard line and not make it a tap in. Let them kick it. Same thing with the kickoff return, if you’re just going to put the ball on the 20, put the ball on the 20.”
I agree with his philosophy that plays that aren’t real plays, like extra points, shouldn’t be in the game so I would be on board with eliminating extra points. Same idea with kickoffs.
But moving the extra point back to the 20 yard line would create a whole other issue where you have games decided by extra points, which would be frustrating. If they were to do anything with it, I’d prefer that they’re eliminated completely.
Vote in our poll and give us some more ideas on what to do with the extra point in the comments.
