The St. Louis Rams controlled the clock effectively in the first quarter, using two possessions to eat up nearly 13 minutes off the clock and to score two touchdowns. Starting from his own 27-yard line, second-year quarterback Sam Bradford led the Rams down the field that eventually wound up as a 73-yard drive. Bradford used nearly eight minutes on the clock to get to Kansas City's six-yard line before connecting with Mike Sims-Walker for the touchdown pass.

After forcing a four-and-out, on the Chiefs' drive, the Rams got back in on the action with about six minutes left on the clock. This time Bradford directed the Rams down the field for a 60-yard drive. He found Lance Kendricks for an 11-yard touchdown pass. Bradford went 8-of-8 for 76 yards Running back Steven Jackson rushed 12 times for 66 yards in the first quarter.
The Chiefs' Matt Cassel had one pass for 20 yards at the end of the quarter, but he also found himself on the ground 11 yards away from the line of scrimmage after James Hall sacked him earlier in the period.
