Tom Kowalski filed a story early Monday morning on Matthew Stafford and the Lions' hurry-up offense against the Patriots. A few hours later, just above that same headline on MLive.com, came the news that Kowalski, 51, was dead. Kowalski was found unresponsive in his home and later was pronounced dead at DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital in Oakland County. He is survived by his fiancee, Diane Wolan.
Lions Beat Writer Tom Kowalski Dies At Age 51
Longtime Lions beat writer found dead in his home at age 51.

Kowalksi had covered the Lions for over 30 years, beginning with the Oakland Press. He was well know for his forthright writing style and just-the-facts reporting, perhaps a result of the Lions' futility for so many years. Known as "Killer" Kowalski, friends talk highly about his sense of humor, as well as his stubborness.
From a personal standpoint, it is eerie to imagine that Kowalski won’t be covering the Lions this season. Having grown up in the Detroit area, Kowalski was always a staple of the football season both in print and over the radio waves. He will truly be missed.
