Larry Fitzgerald, Cardinals Working On Contract Extension

The Cardinals are trying to lock up the best player on the team -- Larry Fitzgerald -- to a multi-year contract extension.

With WR Larry Fitzgerald entering the final year of his contract with the Arizona Cardinals, we've witnessed a phenomenon with fans around the league -- everyone wants their team to sign Fitzgerald. Everyone. He's the best receiver in the league and folks dream about having him on their team.

The Cardinals, on the other hand, are trying to prevent that from happening. Cards GM Rod Graves said earlier this week that they’re trying to get an extension done for Fitzgerald and owner Mike Bidwill is optimistic that can happen before the 2011 season starts.

“I think Larry wants to get it done. We want to get it done. We’ve got the cap space. We’re looking forward to working with them. I know that (GM Rod Graves) has been working on that since free agency started...I think you can get contracts done very quickly when two people are motivated. We’ve got a lot of motivation and I think Larry wants to get it done too.”

Fitzgerald was really smart in that he signed just a four-year, $40 million deal in 2007 instead of the monster six or seven-year deals you see. This gave him an opportunity to hit the open market again when he’s just 28 years old so it’s like have two contracts in your prime.

Now that the Cardinals have acquired QB Kevin Kolb, it probably makes the process of a contract extension a little easier. It’d be hard to convince Fitzgerald the team is serious about winning without a capable quarterback. In Kolb, they think they have that.

Check out SB Nation Arizona where they’ve broken down Bidwill’s press conference and taken a look at the other piece of surprising news he talked about.
