Nick Fairley Injury: Foot Surgery Could Cost Rookie Significant Portion Of Camp
Detroit Lions first-round defensive tackle Nick Fairley underwent surgery on his left foot on Wednesday
“The examination of Nick Fairley’s foot today by Dr. Bob Anderson resulted in a diagnosis consistent with that of Lions’ team physicians that surgical correction was required,” the team said in a statement posted on their official website. “Accordingly, surgery was successfully performed this afternoon in Charlotte, N.C., by Dr. Anderson.
“Nick is expected to miss a significant portion of training camp.”
Selected with the 13th overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the former Auburn Tiger is expected to be part of a tackle rotation that includes 2010 first-round pick and reigning NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Ndamukong Suh, who earned Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors in his first season in the league, and Corey Williams.
Fairley signed a fully guaranteed $9.889 million rookie contract that included a $5.692 million signing bonus on July 29, but tweaked his foot during a pass-rush drill on Monday and was in a walking boot on Tuesday before being shipped to North Carolina for an examination.
”Tough news today for Nick. Obviously he won’t be able to practice, so he’ll have to put in a lot of class time until he’s back on the field,” Lions head coach Jim Schwartz tweeted on Wednesday afternoon.
