Jets Release WR Jerricho Cotchery

The New York Jets have released veteran wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery

The New York Jets announced the release of veteran wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery.

A fourth-round pick (108th overall) pick of the 2004 NFL Draft out of North Carolina State, Cotchery caught 358 passes for 4,514 yards and 18 touchdowns during his seven seasons with the Jets.

Cotchery topped 80 receptions in just two seasons (2006, 2007) and 1,000 yards only once, yet the 29-year-old ranks eighth on the Jets’ all-time list in receptions and is ninth in receiving yards.

Cotchery is expected to draw interest from the Carolina Panthers, who are short on veteran receivers, and the San Diego Chargers, where his former college quarterback, Phillip Rivers, could lobby general manager A.J. Smith to add the 6-foot, 209-pound wideout to start opposite Vincent Jackson.

Releasing Cotchery clears $1.8 million in base salary and salary cap space, which along with his roster spot, is expected to be used to sign veteran wide receiver Derrick Mason, who visited the team on Thursday.
