LaMarr Woodley Signs Massive Six-Year Contract With Pittsburgh Steelers

LB LaMarr Woodley and the Steelers agreed on a massive $61.5 million contract extension.

LB LaMarr Woodley is suddenly a very rich man. We knew the Pittsburgh Steelers planned to wrap him up to a long-term deal and that's what they did on Friday morning. Woodley and the Steelers agreed on a six-year, $61.5 million contract, which Woodley announced via Facebook.

The true barometer of a good deal is how much the player makes in the first couple years and Woodley will cash in with an $18.1 million payout in year one and $27 million total by year two, according to ESPN. The contract is believed to be the second-highest in team history behind QB Ben Roethlisberger's contract.

Even though this is a big contract, it was a no-brainer for both sides. Woodley stays with the most consistent and successful organization in the NFL that gives him the best chance at a Super Bowl -- and he’s not paid bad either. The Steelers get to keep their 2007 second round draft pick and a guy who has at least 10 sacks in three of his first four seasons in the league.

While it is a big deal, it does seem slightly below market-rate. Chiefs LB Tamba Hali just signed a five-year $60 million deal, which is a $12 million per year average. LB DeMarcus Ware has a six-year, $78 million deal, as does DE Charles Johnson.
