With every hall of fame, there are marginal members -- and then there are those like Marshall Faulk. The former MVP and member of the Greatest Show on Turf is about as clear a candidate for Canton as you can find, the kind of player where the vote is merely a formality.
Marshall Faulk To Be Inducted Into NFL Hall Of Fame; Star Of ‘Greatest Show On Turf’
Marshall Faulk, a dynamic back who helped power the high-flying Rams offenses of the late 1990s and early 2000s, will be inducted into Canton on Saturday.
Faulk rushed for more than 1,000 yards in a season seven times in his 12-season career. The New Orleans native played for the Colts from 1994-98 and the St. Louis Rams from 1999-2005, with his stint with the Rams being the high point of his career. Faulk ran for 1,381 yards and had 1,048 receiving yards, becoming the second player in NFL history to pass 1,000 yards in both categories in a single season. It was also a record for yards from scrimmage at the time. Not coincidentally, the Rams won Super Bowl XXXIV that year.
All he did the next season was win the MVP award after setting the single season record for total touchdowns (26). That was part of 136 career touchdowns, including 100 rushing. The seven-time Pro Bowler rushed for 12,279 yards in his career -- ninth all-time when he retired -- and averaged 4.3 yards per carry. Faulk was also named Rookie of the Year for his 1994 season with the Colts (1,282 yards rushing, 522 yards receiving). Faulk averaged more than four yards a rush in all but three seasons.
