Remember when Adrian Peterson, in the midst of swirling rumors of an NFL lockout, called the league “modern-day slavery”? Well, whoops: Peterson regrets having said that.
Adrian Peterson Regrets Calling NFL ‘Modern-Day Slavery’
“I regret using those words because obviously there is nothing, absolutely nothing that you can compare to slavery,” Peterson said. “It stands alone. It was something that I should have used better wording to put that out there. But it’s spoiled milk, it’s old and it’s over with.“There are, in fact, ways to compare American sports to slavery — but they require a lot of nuance, and that wasn’t something Peterson put on his initial remarks. Rarely is anything off the table for reasoned, sensitive, thoughtful discussion, but an interview with Yahoo!‘s NFL blog is probably not the forum for that particular discussion, and Peterson probably shouldn’t have been the one making the argument.
Of course, Peterson did tell the Minneapolis Star-Tribune’s Judd Zulgad that his remarks were taken out of context. So it’s possible that Peterson called the NFL “modern-day slavery” while acknowledging unpaid migrant farm labor, human trafficking, and continued slavery the world over, I guess.
