Steelers Vs. Panthers: Cam Newton Throws First NFL Touchdown Pass

It only took four games, but Cam Newton finally threw his first NFL touchdown pass. The Carolina Panthers' number-one pick capped off a nine-play, 71-yard drive with a 10-yard laser to newly-acquired tight end, Jeremy Shockey, to tie their NFL preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers at 7-7.

Notable on the drive was a two-play sequence that likely served as a roller coaster of emotion for everyone in the state of Carolina. Newton was brought down hard at midfield by Steelers linebacker Larry Foote after scrambling and throwing an incompletion. On the way down, the rookie's foot appeared to get trapped under Foote's leg, potentially causing an ankle sprain.

Luckily, as the entire Panthers franchise held their collective breath, Newton popped back up and proceeded to scamper for 19-yards on the very next play. According to Bob Pompeani -- Pittsburgh’s primary broadcaster -- the brief excursion was longer than any regular-season run by a Panthers’ quarterback in team history.
