Three kickoffs returned for touchdowns, which ties a record for opening weekend; eight total return touchdowns sets a new record for any week in NFL history; Patriots and Dolphins combined for the most passing yards of any two teams on Monday Night Football; K Sebastian Janikowski tied the record for the longest field goal (63 yards).
NFL teams combined for 7,842 passing yards in Week 1 which is the most of any week in NFL history. In addition to that, 14 quarterbacks threw for over 300 yards, which is also a record for any week in NFL history.
We know the NFL is trending towards becoming more of a passing league. We’ve seen that over the past few years as quarterbacks and offenses become more and more sophisticated.
It also makes you wonder if the NFL lockout had anything to do with this. Great quarterbacks -- Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers and Philip Rivers (and, uh, Ryan Fitzpatrick) -- played great last weekend and it doesn't look like the lockout affected them. It makes me wonder if the defenses are having trouble catching up.
