Tony Romo Played ‘Outstanding’ Vs. The Jets, Jerry Jones Says

Tony Romo’s been the butt of roughly a billion NFL jokes over the past 48 hours, but while the football world snickers, Jerry Jones says he thought his QB played great in New York on Sunday.

[pause, to let the world snicker at that]

As Jones said on the radio Tuesday, “This may draw a little criticism, but I thought Tony [Romo] played one of the best games I’ve ever seen him play. You can make a big case that the way we played for three quarters was how we got there at the end and looked like for sure we were going to get the win. But he played outstanding.” Yes, the first three quarters really were kind of outstanding.

Clearly Jerry didn’t watch the fourth quarter.

Mind you, outside of two plays in the fourth quarter, Romo really did play a nearly flawless game. It just so happens that those two plays cost Dallas the game, and Even Romo, himself, told the media afterward that “We win that football game if I don’t do what I did.”

That’s true, but in fairness to Romo, it speaks to the ongoing problem with the Cowboys; rather than play Romo and acknowledge his limits--say, develop a running game that eases pressure on Romo to make plays--Dallas’ front office and coaching staff have treated him like the Cowboys savior, trusting him to lead them over and over again.

Now Jerry’s here to make sure you all know that no matter what happened Sunday night, the Cowboys are sticking with the guy that brought them there (to almost beating the Jets, that is):

“We are going to rise and fall based on what Tony Romo’s about over the next several years, and I’m excited about that. We’ve got someone here that can, if we can get some other things together, we can have a team that gets us in position to have a shot.”

Sure, it’s pretty much the exact opposite of what I wrote about the Cowboys on Monday morning--“A team can win with Tony Romo playing quarterback; a team built around Tony Romo can’t win”--but man, Jerry sure sounds confident, doesn’t he? Like the whole franchise is selling out and diving for the endzone from five yards out, critics be damned. WHO’S FEELIN’ LUCKY?
