NFL Odds, Week 2: Betting On The Year Of The Quarterback

After quarterbacks torched NFL defenses in Week 1, odds are the biggest story of 2011 will revolve around quarterbacks. In the spirit of the season, check out a slew of betting options related to QBs. All content courtesy of SB Nation’s odds partners at OddsShark.com.

Week 1 was dominated by huge quarterbacking performances and it created such buzz that dozens of new QB prop bets have made their way onto the Internet for Week 2.

The stories ranged from Peyton Manning not playing to rookie Cam Newton having a spectacular, 422-passing yard debut for the Panthers to the record-tying 517-yard effort by Tom Brady on Monday Night Football.

This week, the fate of dumped QB David Garrard, a top QB battle between Brady and Philip Rivers at Foxboro, how long Kerry Collins will last in Indy and the return of Michael Vick to Atlanta dominate the water cooler banter, as well as NFL prop bets. Who will sign Garrard?

The Colts are favored here at 3/2 as they try to nurse their way to a Week 2 win at home against Cleveland with the dinosaur Collins under center. The Bengals, with their own ongoing QB drama with Carson Palmer NOT playing, are next at 5/2, followed by the Seahawks and Dolphins at 5/1.

How many games with Collins start?

The over-under is not flattering to Collins, who was dreadful in the Week 1 to Houston. Bodog has 2.5 games as the over-under and a poor showing at home against the Browns Sunday may push this bet quickly under and may speed up the Garrard-to-Indianapolis chants.

Brady vs Rivers

The Chargers opened as 6.5-point underdogs, but it was bet all the way up to -9.5 by Wednesday. But the betting between Brady and Rivers is even-steven. On who will have the most passing yards, it's even odds. [Matchup Report]

Will Dan Marino’s Passing Record be Broken?

All it takes is one 500-yard passing day for the ‘can the record of 5,084 passing yards in a season be broken this year’ talk to begin. Sure enough, Bodog has ‘No’ as the favored position at -700, while ‘Yes’ is +400 (meaning a $100 bet profits $400). All it requires is an average of 318 yards per week over 16 games. Sounds pretty simple?

Cam Newton Passing over-under

If you think the top pick in the draft can come close to duplicating his Week 1 production, then this is an easy OVER bet. The total has been set at exactly half the 422 yards he threw for against the Cardinals. But he faces the Packers in Week 2, which is a much tougher defense. Still, Drew Brees ripped them pretty good last week. There are also Newton props on rushing yards (total 32.5 yards) along with TDs and INTs.

Mike Vick TDs and Contract Odds

Sunday night features the Eagles at Falcons (Philly is 10-1-1 ATS past 12 vs Atlanta by the way) and there are tons of Vick props, ranging from passing yard totals and will he rush for a TD (yes is favored at -140) to the bizarre (how many times will his $100 million contract be mentioned during the telecast and how many times will he be shown wearing a Falcons jersey.

Total Passing Yards - Grand Passing Salami

There is a popular bet in hockey circles known as the Grand Salami, which basically sets a total number for all goals scored by all teams in a given night. Bodog has introduced a QB version for Week 2, setting 7,200 as the over-under for all passing yards by all QBs. Sounds crazy, but sounds fun. For the math-challenged, that is about 225 yards passing per QB.
