Tom Brady, Tony Romo Named Offensive Players Of The Week

A pair of quarterbacks earned the NFC and AFC Offensive Player of the Week nods, the NFL announced today. New England Patriots QB Tom Brady won the honor for the AFC. Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo took the prize for the NFC.

Brady threw for 423 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in the Patriots' 35-21 win over the San Diego Chargers on Sunday. That performance followed Brady's season debut in which he passed for 517 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. Brady now holds the record for the most passing yards through the opening two games of the season, with 940 yards. For some perspective, Brady opened the first two games of the season with 576 yards and six touchdowns in 2007, leading a Patriots offense that set the record for points scored.

Tony Romo had 345 passing yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions leading his team to a dramatic overtime win on the road against the San Francisco 49ers. He completed 22 of 33 passes for a 116.4 passer rating. Romo's stats are only a small part of the story for his performance this week. Backup QB John Kitna took the field for Dallas to start the third quarter; Romo sat on the sidelines with what turned out to be a broken rib and a punctured lung. Late in the third quarter Romo returned to the game. He led a touchdown drive on his second possession after returning, and connected with Jesse Holley on a 77-yard passing play in overtime to set up the winning field goal.

Both Brady and Romo were also nominated for the NFL FedEx Air Player of the Week.
