NFL Odds, Week 3: Betting Trends Make For Big Lines This Sunday

Before you make your picks for Week 3, take a look at some of the betting trends that’ve made for all these big lines. Do you trust the Detroit Lions on the road? Can the Patriots keep their Buffalo streak alive? All content comes courtesy of SB Nation’s odds partners over at OddsShark.com.

NFL fans in office pools and survivor pools love seeing huge trends like those that the third week of the NFL season has churned up. New England is 15-0 against the Bills. The Vikings are 16-1 at home against Detroit. The Packers are 9-1 as a favorite. The Colts are 17-2 against AFC North teams.

Those numbers have created some big point spreads to even out the betting volumes, which accounts for the 15-point spread in San Diego (against the Chiefs), 11 points in Indy (for the Steelers) and nine points (for the Patriots) in Buffalo.

“It got so crazy at the sportsbooks that they have started making the Lions road favorites,” joked Mike Pickett of OddsShark.com. “You are trusting the Lions to bust up a 1-16 streak in betting them to beat an 0-2 team that hasn’t been as bad as its record suggests.” [See article on value of 2-0 starts and the doom of 0-2 starts ]

The Patriots also own a dominant 10-1 streak at Buffalo, where they are 8-2-1 ATS as well. The Bengals are in a situation where they almost never cover the spread, especially at home, and the Titans have been a 4-16 ATS disaster vs AFC West teams dating to 2002.

Point spreads remain off the board in Philly and Dallas, where the Eagles await word on Michael Vick’s availability against the Giants and the Cowboys do the same with Tony Romo against the Redskins. Check the latest NFL odds menu and if you see a strange number, you can safely assume one or both are out.
