Two days after Frank Gore injured his ankle against the Cincinnati Bengals, the general expectation is that Gore will be able to play this Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles. John Clayton said as much on Sportscenter Tuesday morning and 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh seemed to say Gore was good to go during his Monday conference call.
Frank Gore Injury Update: Harbaugh Thinks He’ll Play Sunday Versus Eagles
Harbaugh was a little less confident on Tuesday in a radio interview when he said “we’ll see.” He indicated the team would start practicing on Wednesday and they would get a better idea then. Gore is likely going to end up on the practice participation injury report this week and be a probable or questionable on Friday’s final injury report.
The injury is a concern, but the real concern with Gore for fantasy owners would be the struggles he has dealt with through the first three weeks. Even if the ankle was the cause of his second half struggles against the Bengals, that does not make up for the first two weeks in which he struggled to find much of anything. Some of that is due to the offensive line struggling, but it’s possible he is starting to lose a step. We don’t know for sure, but it is something to consider.
For now, wait and see whether Gore is a go for this weekend. If the struggles continue you'll eventually have to bench Gore. Kendall Hunter may start to see more carries in the coming weeks, but for this week, if Gore starts I'd suggest sticking with him one more week. In the meantime, if Hunter is available on your waiver wire, grab him as a handcuff ASAP.
