San Diego Chargers tight end Antonio Gates is not optimistic about his chances of playing Sunday versus the Miami Dolphins as he battles a foot injury that has lingered well past his expected timetable. Gates tore his planta Fascia last season and expected it to be healed over the summer, but now he finds himself still struggling with the issue. Gates visited a specialist on Tuesday but learned nothing new and found himself sitting out Wednesday's practice.
Antonio Gates Injury Update: Foot Problems Leave Gates Pessimistic About Sunday Versus Dolphins
The issue for Gates will be how much pain he can tolerate in an injury that can be brutal for athletes where running is a key aspect of their performance. Gates faces a decision now of whether to play through the pain or sit three to five weeks to see if the pain goes away or at least becomes more manageable. The Chargers have a bye week six amidst a three-game road trip to Denver, New York and Kansas City.
At this point you're likely stuck with Antonio Gates on your bench. Odds seem fairly high that he won't play this Sunday and it is entirely possible he could be on the shelf for another month. Randy McMichael put together a solid performance on Sunday against the Chiefs, hauling in four receptions for 51 yards. McMichael will remain the tight end moving forward until Gates can get back on the field. While McMichael isn't optimal, he's been a solid receiving tight end in the past. If you are unsure of your TE situation behind Gates, he's not the worst option in the world.
