NFL Roster Cuts: San Francisco 49ers Release Josh McCown, Ronald Johnson, Tony Wragge Among Others

The San Francisco 49ers cut their roster down to the 53-player limit Saturday afternoon as they released 27 players. The most notable cuts were probably QB Josh McCown, OL Tony Wragge and WR Ronald Johnson. The team has some areas they might be looking to fill with a veteran presence, which means current members of the 53-man roster are not necessarily safe.

McCown was signed early last week to provide a veteran backup to QB Alex Smith. He had a solid performance against the San Diego Chargers Thursday evening, but it wasn't enough to secure a roster spot. He will head back to North Carolina where he was working as a high school football coach. The 49ers likely figured they either want another veteran, or if they need a veteran they can get McCown on the phone fairly quickly.

Wragge has been a utility man for the 49ers offensive line, filling in ably at center and guard. The team has given Adam Snyder significant center time and appears comfortable with Daniel Kilgore as a long term option. Ronald Johnson was a sixth round draft choice this past April but has struggled this preseason and might end up on the practice squad.

It is interesting to note that the 49ers released two tight ends competing for the third tight end position, leaving them with only two tight ends. With no third tight end or third quarterback, that could leave two current rostered players still on the bubble.
