Matt Cassel Injury: Cracked Rib Could Keep Quarterback Out Of Season Opener, According To Report

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel reportedly has a cracked rib that could prevent him from playing in the season opener against the Buffalo Bills.

The Kansas City Chiefs are staying mum on quarterback Matt Cassel's status for the season opener against the Buffalo Bills, but multiple reports suggest that he could miss the game. Cassel left the Chiefs' preseason finale after reportedly having the wind knocked out of him.

It now appears that Cassel has suffered a cracked rib that could keep him out of next week's game. The Chiefs would likely turn to Tyler Palko, a fifth-year player, to start if Cassel fails to improve during the week. Palko has bounced around the league since 2007, but he only saw action in the NFL last season with the Kansas City Chiefs. According to Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star:

A source close to the situation said Chiefs coach Todd Haley told Palko after the game, “You’d better be ready to play Sunday.’’

Rookie quarterback Ricky Stanzi is the other alternative on the roster, but Palko has the advantage of being around the league for several years. Until the extent of Cassel's injury is known, Chiefs fans will be on edge.
