David Garrard To Be Released By Jacksonville Jaguars, According To Report

The Jaguars have made a surprising move by informing QB David Garrard they’ll be releasing him, according to a report.

The NFL always has a way to continue shocking us and the Jacksonville Jaguars are proof of that today. Jay Glazer of FOX Sports reports the Jaguars have informed QB David Garrard that he will be released. Yes, the presumptive starting quarterback for the Jaguars has been told five days before the season opener that he will be released.

Per the report, QB Luke McCown will be the Jaguars starting quarterback.

Garrard signed a seven-year, $63 million deal in 2008 and had three years remaining on his contract. He was due over $7 million in 2011 so you have to wonder if this move has something to do with money. Also of note is that it was just on Monday that the Jaguars voted on their team captains and Garrad was surprisingly not one of them, according to SB Nation’s Big Cat Country.

This is a pretty big shocker. Garrard was expected to start the season but now it'll be Luke McCown, who just last week was listed as third on the depth chart behind QB Blaine Gabbert, who was listed second.

This makes a recent poll over at Big Cat Country more interesting. When asked if a quarterback change would change their mind about the Jaguars season outlook, 47 percent of voters preferred cutting Garrard and going with McCown and Gabbert

Hop on over to Big Cat Country where they’ll have full analysis of exactly what this means.
