Jimmy Graham Injury: Saints TE Goes Down, Heads To Locker Room

The New Orleans Saints are on the road against the San Francisco 49ers in the divisional round of the 2012 NFL playoffs and they have a problem early in the game. Saints tight end Jimmy Graham, who put up one of the best tight end seasons in NFL history, went down in the first quarter with an apparent head injury.

Here’s a shot of Graham’s injury:

49ers defensive back Donte Whitner was called for pass interference on the play (he didn't look back) but Graham's head whipped against the turf. He was tended to by the trainers before leaving for the locker room. There is no status update on him for the rest of the game. [Update: Graham returned to the field later in the first quarter.)

This will allow the NFL to test out the video replay system they have set up for trainers. If there’s a situation in which trainers and/or medical people need to view a replay for the purposes of determining whether an injury occurred, there is a video replay system set up on the sidelines that looks like this:

Only medical people can access the replay system -- not coaches or players. The system was instituted last week due in large part to the Colt McCoy concussion against the Steelers a few weeks ago when he ultimately re-entered the game with a concussion.
