Longtime offensive coordinator and former NFL head coach Mike Martz is retiring from coaching, NFL Network's Jason La Canfora reports. Martz was most recently the offensive coordinator with the Chicago Bears.

Martz resigned from his position with the Bears as his contract was set to expire later this year. Various reports linked him to coaching openings in the NFL and college but apparently he’s opted to retire instead.

Martz's time in St. Louis in the late 1990s and early 2000s are what many will remember most about his career. Martz was the offensive coordinator for the 1999 Rams that won the Super Bowl before becoming the head coach and taking the team to the 2001 Super Bowl, which they lost to the Patriots. Martz's Rams finished in second place or better in every season in which he was the head coach.

It’ll be interesting to see if Martz will ever pull a Brett Favre and consider un-retiring. He’s only 60 years old and we’ve seen a number of coaches consider coming back after a quick retirement.
