Mike Nolan Joins Atlanta Falcons As Defensive Coordinator

The Atlanta Falcons have their new defensive coordinator -- Mike Nolan. The team announced the move on Tuesday.

The Atlanta Falcons have decided on a defensive coordinator -- Mike Nolan. The team confirmed the two sides have agreed to a deal. The former Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator joins a unit that ranked 18th in points allowed last season. The position became open when Brian VanGorder left the Falcons and joined Auburn as their defensive coordinator.

SB Nation’s The Falcoholic looks at what this means for the Falcons:

Nolan has run both a 4-3 and 3-4 in his career, and changes are good he’ll be asked to install a hybrid system in Atlanta. That could very well mean some personnel changes in the defensive front seven. In general, though, the D should be predicated on tighter coverage, a better pass rush and changing up the scheme to confuse opposing offenses. In essence, it ought to be an improvement.

The Falcons also lost Mike Mularkey at offensive coordinator and replaced him with Dirk Koetter.

Nolan comes from the Dolphins where he spent the last two seasons as defensive coordinator. He was in Denver for a year before that and also spent four seasons as the San Francisco 49ers head coach.
