In case there was any doubt as to whether or not the New York Jets intend to bring back Santonio Holmes, team owner Woody Johnson put that to rest on Thursday. In saying that Holmes would definitely be back in 2012, Johnson called the wide receiver "one of the best players we've ever had." (via @JetsStream)
Santonio Holmes Will Return To New York Jets In 2012, Owner Woody Johnson Says
Jets owner Woody Johnson says Santonio Holmes will be back in 2012, which may not be good for Mark Sanchez’s future.
Calling Holmes one of the best players in any team’s history seems to be a bit of a stretch. Johnson’s hyperbole aside, though, Holmes is coming off a 2011 season that is probably a little more impressive than his career-low 654 receiving yards suggests. Of Holmes’ 51 catches, eight of them were touchdowns, which matched a career high.
Johnson's statement could also be seen as a bit of a swipe at quarterback Mark Sanchez, who despite setting career highs in passing yards, touchdown passes and completion percentage also has received the bulk of the blame for the Jets' late-season collapse. Running back LaDainian Tomlinson recently revealed that Sanchez and Holmes were severely at odds and even suggested their relationship may be beyond repair. Holmes' two lowest receiving yards seasons have come with Sanchez as his quarterback.
