After spending this past season on the free agent market, former Baltimore Ravens quarterback Troy Smith has signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Smith spent three seasons as a backup in Baltimore, before being traded to the San Francisco 49ers prior to the 2010-11 season.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have acquired former Baltimore Ravens backup Troy Smith off of the free agent market. The former college star started six games for the 49ers during the 2010 season.

Once upon a time Smith was in a battle for the Ravens starting quarterback job with Joe Flacco after Kyle Boller was placed on injured reserve during the 2008 season. Flacco won out as a rookie, however, relegating Smith to the bench. With the Niners, the former Heisman winner started six games in place of an injured Alex Smith. He was solid, though unspectacular in his limited opportunity, throwing for 1,176 yards and five touchdowns to four interceptions.
In Pittsburgh, Smith could see plenty of the field if Ben Roethlisberger's troublesome ankle continues to act up. As a result of the acquisition, veteran Charlie Batch's days in Pittsburgh may be numbered.
