Jim Tressel Could Be Colts Leading Candidate, According To Tony Dungy

Over the weekend Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay tweeted that the Colts coaching search would likely come to an end sometime later this week. The Colts have reportedly interviewed a number of candidates and as Irsay and new GM Ryan Grigson continue to mull the candidates, a favorite might have emerged.

Former Colts coach and current NBC analyst, Tony Dungy, was on the Dan Patrick Show on Monday morning and indicated Jim Tressel, the former Ohio State coach, could be the leading candidate.

“I think Jim Irsay has his man in mind. It may be Jim Tressel, that’s what I’m hearing.”

Tressel joined the Colts in the middle of the 2011 season as a gameday consultant. He was the Ohio State head coach from 2001-2010.

Dungy’s words obviously carry a little more meaning considering he used to coach there and presumably stays in touch with some people in Indianapolis. It’s not a confirmed report by any means but interesting nonetheless.

This report comes on the heels of one from Mike Freeman of CBS Sports in which a Colts source told him there’s “no way in hell” Tressel will be the Colts next head coach.
