Angry Lions Fan Made Superdome Bomb Threats, Wanted By FBI

Frustrated with watching his favorite team fall behind during their Jan. 7 playoff game with the New Orleans Saints, Detroit Lions fan Shawn Payton took matters into his own hands, attempting to stop the game by calling in two bomb threats to the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, reports the Times-Picayune.

Payton, who's obviously not related to Saints head coach Sean Payton, placed his first call at 9:12 p.m., shortly after Drew Brees' TD pass to Jimmy Graham extended the Saints' lead to 24-14, telling the reception desk, "I will blow up your building."

The second call came 45 minutes later after the Lions failed to convert an onside kick: “Hi, I want you to relay a message to the sideline. If your stupid Southern team keeps winning, there will be reper ... severe consequences. OK?”

The game was never stopped, but that’s the least of Payton’s worries after the FBI used phone records to track him down to his Michigan home. He admitted making the calls when interviewed by an agent Monday, and an arrest warrant has since been issued. In a phone interview with the Times-Picayune, Payton admitted that he’s scared of the consequences for his dumb mistake:

“I’m scared,” he said. “I hope they realize that I didn’t mean it and that I’m taking steps to get counseling.”

Payton said alcohol wasn’t a factor in the calls, which he said he made after Googling a number for the Superdome.

“I don’t drink, and I don’t do drugs. From time to time, I do get frustrated and go off without meaning it,” he said. “I let some words fly out of my mouth, and I sincerely apologize. I will never ever, ever, ever do anything like that again.”
