Mike Martz will not return to the Chicago Bears as offensive coordinator in 2012, according to a report from the Chicago Tribune, which says Martz is resigning from the Bears due to "philosophical differences".

Busy day for the Bears, who also fired GM Jerry Angelo on Tuesday morning.

This move has been rumored for a while now, ever since a report surfaced midseason that Martz wasn’t likely to return.

Head coach Lovie Smith seemed angry when questions of Martz’s future were brought up recently but as recently as Monday he never said that Martz will be back in 2012.

“Mike [Martz] did a super job for us. He had a lot of injuries this year. I think you guys know how I feel about him. But this is a new year coming up, and we’ll see how that goes.”

Martz’s name was connected to a college head coach opening earlier this year yet denied he had any talks about that. It’s unclear if he plans to immediately get back into coaching.

Martz only technically resigned from the Bears. His contract was expiring at the end of the league year anyway so it was decision time for both sides. He reportedly declined a contract extension earlier this year.
