The San Diego Chargers announced earlier this week that head coach Norv Turner and GM A.J. Smith would return to the team for the 2012 season. But one coach not returning for 2012 is defensive coordinator Greg Manusky. The San Diego Union Tribune reports Manusky has been fired.
Greg Manusky Fired As Chargers Defensive Coordinator
The Chargers decided to keep head coach Norv Turner and GM A.J. Smith but they won’t keep defensive coordinator Greg Manusky, who has been fired.
This doesn’t come as a shock. Manusky’s defense regressed last season where they were ranked 22nd in the league. The Chargers defense has been ranked between fifth to 15th from 2004-2010 so the drop was noticeable.
Manusky was a linebackers coach for the Chargers from 2002-06 before taking the defensive coordinator job with the San Francisco 49ers. He returned to San Diego for the 2011 season.
The Chargers are expected to have considerable turnover this year so the next defensive coordinator may be working with different pieces than Manusky had.
