Tim Tebow On The Game-Winner To Demaryius Thomas

Say what you want about Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos, but they seem to win when it counts. The Broncos beat the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday night in the AFC Wild Card game and they did it on the first play in overtime thanks to a terrific 80-yard pass from Tim Tebow to Demaryius Thomas.

Tebow lined up on the first play of extra time and with the Steelers clearly expecting run, he sold the play-action fake to Willie McGahee, looked down field and threw a strike to Thomas, who caught the pass with no safety help in front of him from the Steelers. One stiff-arm later and Thomas was in the end zone.

So how did Tebow make that pass?

“It’s a great call, first of all. It’s something we had ran earlier in the game. Just off some of our zone-read stuff, [Pittsburgh was] bringing the safeties, playing, like, a Blitz Zero look but not blitzing the [linebackers] inside. It was a great call by Coach [offensive coordinator Mike] McCoy. We wanted to try and get [WR Demaryius Thomas] in there, behind the safeties blitzing, and he did a great job getting off the corner and just waiting for the pass through the second window from the backer, and [I] just tried to fit it in there, and he made a great catch and a great run after the catch, and the offensive line blocked phenomenal. It was also a great call. It’s a pretty good fake, and [RB] Willis [McGahee] really sold it, and the [offensive] line really sold it, so [Pittsburgh] couldn’t really get a lot of pressure, and [Thomas] made a heck of a play.”

If Tebow can make that throw consistently, the Broncos become a lot more dangerous. The story line before this week was that Tebow couldn’t pass the ball very well but he dispelled that notion, at least for one night, by surpassing 300 yards through the air against one of the league’s best pass defenses.
