New England Patriots linebacker Brandon Spikes made controversial a controversial joke Wednesday, declaring himself homophobic and comparing it to his fear of spiders on his personal Twitter account. Spikes received immediate backlash from the tweet, prompting him to defend himself by tweeting it was "just a joke" and telling his followers to "chill out," according to SB Nation Boston.

Spikes has over 283,000 Twitter followers, so it didn’t take long for the joke to spread across the Internet. Neither the NFL nor the Patriots have made statements regarding the tweet.

This isn't the first time an NFL player has been involved in a controversy surrounding homophobia on Twitter. Running back Larry Johnson received heavy scrutiny after making homophobic comments on Twitter back in 2009. Johnson was suspended two weeks by the Chiefs for the incident.

The Patriots are scheduled to play the Seahawks, with Spikes in the lineup, at CenturyLink Field on Sunday.
