Harrison Smith will not be fined for contact with referee

Minnesota Vikings safety Harrison Smith will not be fined by the NFL for making contact with an official during an altercation in the team’s Week 5 win over the Tennessee Titans.

Brace Hemmelgarn-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

Minnesota Vikings rookie safety Harrison Smith got a bit too bold during the team's Week 5 win over the Tennessee Titans and laid his hands on a game official, but the NFL league office decided on Friday that the former Notre Dame Fighting Irish star will not receive a fine for his actions. Smith, Minnesota's first-round selection in the 2012 NFL Draft, was ejected from the game after he shoved the official to the ground during an on-field altercation with Titans players.

Earlier in the week it became clear that Smith will not face a suspension for the incident, and Pro Football Talk relayed the good news that the young defender will also avoid a monetary penalty. Smith has started from day one for the Vikings, and he has collected 25 tackles, defended six passes and recovered one fumble over five starts for Minnesota.

The Vikings visit the Washington Redskins (4:25 p.m. ET on FOX) in Week 6.
