Michael Vick contract: QB could be on his way out, fantasy keepers take notice

Adam Schefter reports that the Eagles could release Vick after the season if they don’t get some playoff magic. We break down the fantasy implications.

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick and his "$100 million contract" are already in question, just a year after it was signed. Vick was never likely to get the full $100,000,000, but now it appears that he might not even be an Eagle after this season, according to Adam Schefter. The controversial QB is due $3 million right after the Super Bowl, but if they cut him before that day, they'll be completely off the hook for the rest of Vick's contract.

That would save the team a lot of dough and be able to transition to 2012 rookie Nick Foles, a highly-rated prospect that showed much promise in the preseason. Vick's deal was a six-year contract, but unless the Eagles make a playoff run and Vick makes himself valuable and irreplaceable, the contract is going to be much shorter than that.

Fantasy Take: Keeper owners of Vick will want to note that if Vick is not an Eagle, his star could shoot down even further than it already has. Vick is only posting a 77.8 QB rating after he had posted a 100.2 rating in his breakout 2010 season. In fact, over his last 18 games Vick has posted a 82.7 rating with 24 touchdowns and 20 interceptions with 18 fumbles.

The Eagles are also a mediocre 10-8 during that time, so he's not doing much to show how valuable he really is. If Vick left Philly and their two star receivers, he could be in danger of either going somewhere that he has to compete for a starting job or where they don't have much offensive talent. Could he hook up with Larry Fitzgerald in Arizona? With Santonio Holmes and the Jets? It's something we will have to monitor, and trust me, we will.
