Alex Smith quickly rescinds up-and-coming fantasy value

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith had a terrible game in Week 6. We breakdown the fantasy implications.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith had just about as rough as an outing as a signal-caller can have on a given week. Against the visiting New York Giants in Week 6, Smith finished 19-of-31 passing for 200 yards, with 3 interceptions and no touchdowns. It was a very uncharacteristic game on Smith's part, but the play-calling did not put him in any advantageous positions.

The Giants got an early lead on the 49ers, and Smith had to play from behind. The Niners all but abandoned the run game, rendering the offense one-dimensional and inefficient.

Fantasy Analysis: This is more ammunition for the critics that claim Alex Smith is best suited in the role as a game manager. The 49ers had Smith trying to win this game on his own and it wasn’t working. 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed as much in the post-game press conference.

Smith excelled at getting the ball to his playmakers and playing mistake-free football. That was not the case on Sunday. With these kind of flaws in his game, it’s hard to depend on Smith as a week-to-week option. The Giants were a tough opponent. Feel free to play match-ups with Smith in the future where this is less likely to take place.
