Washington Redskins vs New York Giants: point spread, betting preview, pick

Washington is now a threat every week, thanks to the youngsters running the offense. But the Giants may be the league’s best team right now. Is 5.5 points too much to lay on Big Blue?

Stephen Dunn

Traditionally, the Washington Redskins and New York Giants play UNDER the total when they lock up in the Meadowlands.

But traditionally, part of the reason for those low-scoring games is that Washington never has a very good quarterback.

That tradition is changing for the Redskins and the UNDER tradition may be ending too. Washington will be looking for its third straight win over the Giants this Sunday as 5.5-point road underdogs on the NFL betting menu at most sportsbooks.

Robert Griffin III added another feather to his cap last week with a thrilling 38-26 win over the Minnesota Vikings, leading the way with 138 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns on 13 carries. Griffin III and fellow rookie Alfred Morris have powered the Redskins to the league's second best rushing attack with 166 rushing yards per game and third best scoring attack with 29.7 points per game.

Washington’s defense has been a problem though allowing 28.8 points per game. The Redskins are 3-3 both SU and ATS.

Entering last week’s game against San Francisco as a 7-point underdog, the New York Giants made a clear statement to the rest of the league with a 26-3 win that they are still the team to beat in the NFL. At 4-2 SU and 3-3 ATS, New York has picked up where it left off last season both offensively (29.7 points per game) and defensively (allowing 19 points per game).

New York is now 10-2 SU and 9-3 ATS in its last 12 games and the UNDER is 8-1 the past nine meetings between these two here at MetLife Stadium.

While Washington is 2-1 SU and 3-0 ATS in its last three games against the Giants, the Giants have had great success against Washington at home in recent years. New York is 6-2 SU and 5-2-1 ATS in its last eight home games against the Redskins.

On paper, this looks like a bad matchup for the Redskins. New York has one of the most dangerous defensive lines in the game, and has already shown the ability to contain mobile quarterbacks this season.

Defensively, Washington has the worst passing defense in the league, which is a dangerous proposition against Eli Manning and this lethal wide receiving corps. 5.5 points in an NFC East division rivalry game is a lot, but the signs point to the Giants in this one.
