Detroit Lions bring back Alphonso Smith

The Lions have re-signed cornerback Alphonso Smith to provide the ailing secondary with some depth, and cut running back Keiland Williams.

The Detroit Lions re-signed cornerback Alphonso Smith on Wednesday and released running back Keiland Williams, according to MLive.com's Anwar Richardson. The Lions need cornerback depth with Bill Bentley and Jacob Lacey battling injuries, so they brought in Smith and former Lion Justin Miller to work out on Wednesday before signing Smith to a deal. Smith's contract with the Lions is for $700,000, and runs through the end of this season.

Smith spent the previous two seasons with the Lions, but lost his job to Bentley in training camp before eventually being released. He's started 10 games over the past three seasons, and has eight interceptions and 73 tackles to his credit. Smith also worked out with the Miami Dolphins earlier this year before coming to terms with the Lions.

The Lions face the Chicago Bears on Monday night, and will need strong play from their secondary to help contain Bears wideout Brandon Marshall.
