Gary Kubiak: Running the ball Texans’ ‘formula for winning’

The Houston coach emphasized the importance of patience and sticking with the ground game in an interview on Tuesday.

The Texans, who have gotten out to one of the best starts in the NFL this season at 6-1, are one of the most balanced teams in the NFL -- ranking sixth in rushing, fifth in rushing yards allowed and fifth in passing yards allowed.

Of the four major statistical categories, Houston ranks lowest in passing, a stark contrast to a league that has become increasingly defined by the ability to move the ball through the air.

In an interview with a Houston-area radio station, Texans coach Gary Kubiak talked about his team’s commitment to the run game (courtesy of Sports Radio Interviews):

I think it’s patience in a lot of ways. In the NFL you’re probably down a good 20 snaps per game compared to the college game so if you start to panic and say ‘well I’m only going to get 60 snaps and I have to make the most out of these’ instead of saying ‘okay how do I win this next game?’ And I think you start putting the ball up quite a bit so you kind of have to have patience in what you’re doing and have your formula for winning.

For the Texans, the proof is in the pudding. After only 7 games, their top three running backs -- Arian Foster, Ben Tate and Justin Forsett -- have already rushed for over 950 yards and 11 touchdowns.
