Panthers vs. Bears, Week 8: Jay Cutler, Robbie Gould redeem themselves late

The Bears needed two fourth-quarter comebacks to beat the Panthers on Sunday, and a couple of players who struggled early came through in the end.

The Chicago Bears won a surprisingly difficult game over the one-win Carolina Panthers on Sunday afternoon, and they needed big performances in the fourth quarter to do so. Jay Cutler and Robbie Gould both contributed to the Bears' 19-7 deficit, but each played their part in bringing the team back.

Steven Schweickert of Bears blog Windy City Gridiron was happy to see Cutler, and the normally reliable Gould, bounce back and lead the Bears to victory:

But Gould got a chance to atone for his mistake after the Panthers were stalled and forced to kick their fifth field goal with two and a half minutes left in the game, more than enough time for a surging Jay Cutler, who had struggled the first three quarters, to drive the Bears into Panthers’ territory and set up Gould’s winner.

Gould had missed a 33-yard field goal earlier in the fourth quarter, but hit the game-winner as time expired to propel the Bears to a 6-1 record. Cutler’s final stats weren’t pretty, as he threw for just 186 yards with one touchdown and one interception, but he did lead Chicago on key drives in the fourth quarter to bring the Bears back.

The Bears travel to Nashville to face the Titans next Sunday. Tennessee fell to the Colts in overtime on Sunday and holds a 3-5 record.
