Week 9 opening NFL odds: Packers, Texans big chalk

There are several huge spreads and the Patriots aren’t involved in any of them, but only because they are on a bye week. The Packers and Texans each face double-digit home spreads.

The Packers and Texans opened as double-digit home favorites as sportsbooks set their Week 9 opening NFL odds.

And the Chargers were expected to reach -10 as they host the Chiefs. The game opened at -9 and doesn’t have many days to move as this AFC West tilt goes Thursday night.

Green Bay spots 11.5 points to Arizona, a team riding an 0-4 streak after a 4-0 start. Houston, coming off a bye week, lays the same 11.5 points to Buffalo.

”The unofficial second half starts Thursday and some teams are in serious playoff jeopardy, which generates some interesting Week 9 betting opportunities,” said Jack Randall, whose OddsShark.com site provides lines to SBNation.

Five teams opened as road chalk, none of them more surprising than Miami. The Dolphins, coming off a rout of the Jets on the road, were 1-point chalk at Indianapolis, who similarly won as a road dog in Week 8.

Denver is making believers out of fans and oddsmakers alike after routing the Saints. They lay three points at Cincinnati.

Baltimore is just a 3.5 point favorite at Cleveland, which pulled off a home upset of San Diego in Week 8 (in the lowest-scoring game of the week at 7-6). The Bears give 3.5 points at Tennessee and the Lions give four points to the Jaguars - yet more reality and disrespect for AFC South teams as three of the four are home dogs this week.

The Monday nighter features a pair of alleged Super Bowl threats who are now each below .500. The struggling Eagles are 3.5-point road dogs at New Orleans.

Underdogs were 8-6 ATS a week ago and bettors also cleaned up by backing the Giants and Patriots, who each won easily as favorites.
