NFL reviews violent comments by Titans coordinator Jerry Gray

Did Titans defensive coordinator Jerry Gray cross the line in comments made to the Tennesseean?

Don McPeak-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

The NFL is reviewing comments made by Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator Jerry Gray, which it views as being too violent, per an ESPN source.

In a Thursday story in the Nashville Tennesseean, Gray was quoted regarding the attitude he hopes to see out of his players.

[Players] have to say, ‘This is my territory between the numbers, and if you throw the football you better bring the Gator truck.’ And that’s how you have to play. You can’t play timid in the NFL.

The “Gator truck” is in reference to the cart that is used to remove injured players from the playing surface. It is that comment, one that could be construed as deliberately encouraging player injuries, that is the crux of the controversy.

Gray did admit that his "choice of words under the circumstances was probably bad," and that he does not want his players "thinking about injuring people." Still, in the wake of the New Orleans Saints bounty scandal and the growing concerns of traumatic brain injuries sustained while playing football, these are comments the league is not likely to ignore.
