Unitas did his in a different era — one in which a lot fewer touchdown passes were being thrown — but Brees' accomplishment is no less staggering. It takes remarkable durability, consistency and proficiency, three things in which Brees has excelled since making a once-doubtful return to form when he was unceremoniously dumped from the Chargers, the team against which he broke the record, and picked up by the Saints.
Since his rejection — and he would be the first to tell you that's exactly how it felt after a gruesome shoulder injury nearly ended his career — he has been masterful and led the Saints from dysfunction to a Super Bowl ring. The Chargers haven't even made the Super Bowl under the quarterback Brees was replaced with, Philip Rivers.
Though the Saints are 0-4 this year, that has been through no fault of Brees, and this is a record that, if not unbreakable, will be damn hard to match anytime soon.
